CELEBRATION OF 40 YEARS OF THE GRACE OF GOD ON MAY HOSPITAL SHENDAM

Do not despise the days of small beginnings ...
(Zechariah 4:10)

For four decades, May Hospital, Shendam, Plateau state, has stood as a beacon of good healthcare delivery in the Nigerian health sector, providing compassionate and exceptional healthcare services to Shendam community, Plateau state and Central Nigeria. Founded in 1985, the hospital has grown into a leading healthcare institution, renowned for its commitment to patient care and innovative medical service delivery. The dedicated team of professionals led by the founder, Dr Robert I. Ati, have worked tirelessly to offer their best even in the face of economically challenging times. The workers have demonstrated over the years a commitment to delivering quality care with compassion, excellence and integrity.
The Hospital started as a small four-bed clinic on 14th January, 1985 with a small staff of one doctor (Dr Robert I. Ati), one nurse (Mrs Christiana Mangdik), one attendant (Mrs Binda), one cleaner/Labourer (Mr Animo Ndam), one Receptionist (Mr Usman Musa) and one security man (Mallam Bello).
After going through a lot of metamorphosis for the past 40 years the hospital has been transformed into a 25-bed hospital.
The hospital now has 40 workers, including 4 Doctors, 8 Nurses and Midwives, 6 Ward Attendants, 4 security men, 4 X-ray Technicians, a Laboratory Scientist, 3 Laboratory Technicians, 5 Receptionists, 2 Cashiers, 1 Laundry man, 1 Facility and Maintenance Officer, and 1 Administrative Secretary.
Currently the hospital has 2 Operating Theatres, an X-ray unit, Ultrasound Scanning facility, a Baby Nursing unit, ECG machine, well-staffed and well-equipped Laboratory, and Medical Electronic Recording software on computers. The Baby Nursing unit has an Incubator, an Infant Warmer, a Phototherapy machine and Newborn resuscitation equipment.

Major landmarks in progression are elevation from status of a clinic to that of a hospital in 1987, and movement from a temporary site to the permanent site which is a single storey complex capable of admitting up to 25 patients.

Major awards and recognitions include:
1. Rural Medical Practice Award from Nigeria Medical Association, Plateau State, in 1987.
2. National Productivity Order of Merit Award to the Chief Medical Director, Dr Robert I. Ati in 2020 from National Productivity Centre.
3. Medical Practitioner of the Year, Private Practice 2021 Award Nomination to the Chief Medical Director, Dr Robert I. Ati from Dokilink.com Awards.

Dear May Hospital Team,
I hope this message finds you all well. As I reflect on my journey in medicine, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity I had to work with you during the early years of my career. The memories from those days—first at the annex, and later at the main complex—are some of the most formative and cherished of my professional life.
I am especially grateful for the mentorship I received from Dr Robert Ati, the Chief Medical Director, whose guidance helped shape not only my skills as a doctor but also my approach to patient care. The supportive, collaborative atmosphere at May Hospital truly made it a unique place to learn and grow, and I carry those lessons with me every day.
May Hospital will always have a special place in my heart, as this was the place where I saw my partner in life; now Justice Pauline N. Njar; who was then a mid-wife in the hospital, and I remain deeply appreciative of the trust and encouragement I was given. The values of excellence, compassion, and teamwork that I witnessed there continue to inspire me.
I look forward to staying connected and wish all of you success as you continue your important work in providing exceptional care to the community.
Congratulations to you Dr Robert Ati!
Happy 40th Anniversary to May Hospital, Shendam!

Dr Eno Njar

May Hospital @ 40 gives me great joy, seeing how many lives, staff and patients alike have been transformed. CONGRATULATIONS DR ATI! WE LOVE YOU.

Dr I. J. Artu.
Past Medical Officer

I’m one of the staff members (the only midwife) that started the popular May Hospital in Shendam with the Medical Director, Dr. Robert I. Ati; this was in January, 1985. May Hospital was the only private hospital in the whole of Shendam Local Government Area when we commenced work. As the hospital improved in workforce and services, we proceeded to cover neighbouring states like Taraba, Adamawa and Bauchi States. It was first situated opposite the Divisional Police Headquarters, Shendam. After some few years, through dint of hard work and perseverance, the Medical Director built a more befitting Hospital structure adjacent the NEPA office, Shendam.
Working with Dr R.I. Ati was a very pleasant experience because he is down-to-earth a gentleman, hardworking, disciplined and dedicated to work. He really exposed me to areas in the medical field that made people have confidence in me wherever I worked after I left May Hospital for civil service. I thank God for the opportunity to work with Dr. R. I. Ati which culminated into the hospital becoming the darling of the people. Long live May Hospital! Long live Shendam LGC! Long live Plateau State and long live Nigeria!
Today, I am a Director of School of Midwifery in Plateau State College of Nursing Sciences, Vom, applying my wealth of knowledge gained from May Hospital.

Mrs Christiana Mangdik
Pioneer & first Nurse/Midwife/Matron (1985 – 1988)

A special goodwill message to my esteemed mentor, the CMD of May Hospital and his lovely family, on this special and memorable day marking our great May Hospital at forty. May Hospital was my first place of work, job experience and everything. I started work in November 1985 and left Nov. 2006 as matron of the Hospital. May GOD bless you and your family. I wish you long life and posterity. Happy New year!

Mrs Caroline Plangzak
Fmr Matron

40 YEARS OF QUALITY HEALTH CARE DELIVERY
I join millions of well-wishers around the world to congratulate May Hospital Shendam on the milestone achievement of attaining 40 years of qualitative health care delivery in Nigeria.
Over the years, May Hospital Shendam has bridged the gap in patient care with digitally equipped facilities which has defined and still is, redefining medical practice.
In my sojourn in the hospital from May, 2008 – 2009, and 2011 – 2012, I came face to face with the realities of dedication, commitment and selflessness on the part of our Medical Director; Dr. Robert I. Ati, and I am eternally grateful for the experiences garnered.
Four decades is no mean feat. However, I hope this citadel of Health care delivery will surpass her current achievement and expand the horizon of patient care in Nigeria and beyond.
Congratulations! Happy May Hospital at 40.

On behalf of my family, I heartily facilitate with the CMD of MAY HOSPITAL SHENDAM, Plateau State as the hospital marks its forty years anniversary on the 14th January, 2025.
No doubt, the hospital has witnessed tremendous strides in all situations. The hospital has been well known for its quality and standard services dissemination since its inception. I was employed as the administrative secretary of the hospital in June, 2017, and within these years of my employment, laudable achievements have been recorded, just to mention but a few; the upgrade of the hospital software application, the accreditation of facility from primary services to secondary services by both NHIA and PLASCHEMA which made it a referral centre for most clinics and hospitals around the community, the recognition of the hospital as APIN and LTR centre, etc.
The hospital is also ranked as one of, if not the best, in the southern senatorial district of the state.
To crown it all, the prompt payment of workers’ salaries is a great attribute that can always be commended. Thank you.
God bless May Hospital Shendam.

Mr Danladi Amos Gambo, B.Sc.
Administrative Secretary (2017 – Till Date)

God is great! When I started working in May Hospital in 2005, I noticed prompt payment of staff salaries, leave grants, gratuities every five years, and bonuses for workers from time to time.
I began work as a Medical Lab Assistant and was given the chance to further my career and studies to become a Medical Lab Technician. I continually get steady sources of income and bonuses that have now made me a landlord, and I now have a family of mine too. Praise God for all these.
The hospital put in place computer software for patients’ results to be confidential.
